Online misprints

Misprints in newspapers are relatively common. Most of them are harmless and not worth a second glance. But some are funny, embarrassing and even libellous. And permanent. They are archived for others to view forever...or for as long as a copy of the paper exists. Thankfully the British Newspaper Library ensures that will be for a very long time.

(Somewhere in the library's collection in Colindale is a copy of The Times containing a classified advertisement offering for rent a house in the country - but with the 'o' missing from country. That gem was published sometime in 1976. Good luck to you if you try to find it.)

Less easy to find after a period of time are misprints on the internet. The instant nature of publishing online is that changes can be made easily and quickly. So should you see such an error, it is wise to take a screengrab of the mistake before alerting the publisher to the cock-up.

That's what I have done with the gem on today's (Sunday) People website. The story is that Calfornia Gurls (sic) singer Katy Perry and British funnyman (sic) Russell Brand may have to call of their wedding planned for tomorrow. The headline says different!

Now the two men concerned are difficult to mix-up, surely?
